F-Secure action to counter Adobe Flash-based exploits

F-Secure Labs has discovered a recent surge in the number of exploits targeting Adobe’s Flash plug-in. Given the consistent use of Flash vulnerabilities in crimeware, F-Secure is adding their voice to other security researchers suggesting that Adobe and other companies reconsider using the popular plug-in.
Flash vulnerabilities were thrust in the limelight after a zero-day exploit used by the Italy-based surveillance company Hacking Team was stolen in a recent attack, resulting in its proliferation in exploits kits used by criminals. According to F-Secure Labs, detections of Flash exploits from exploit kits increased by 82% in the days following the attack. Researchers are attributing this increase to the adoption of the zero-day exploit stolen in the hack, as well as the subsequent discovery of two additional zero-day exploits.Consequentially, security researchers are becoming more vocal in their criticism of Flash’s security flaws.
“Criminals using exploit kits typically target insecure software that’s widely used, and Flash has given them an easy target for at least the past seven or eight months,” said F-Secure Senior Researcher Timo Hirvonen. “Newer technologies are available and becoming more popular anyway, so it would really be worth the effort to just speed up the adoption of newer, more secure technologies, and stop using Flash completely.”
Businesses Need to Better Manage Flash-Based Risks
Exploit kits are sets of tools that criminals use to create crimeware campaigns, and largely attempt to infect computers with malware that exploits vulnerabilities in software. Exploit kits have historically been proficient at exploiting vulnerabilities in Java and older versions of Microsoft Windows, but exploits targeting Flash have become more prominent in 2015.
According to F-Secure Security Advisor Sean Sullivan, businesses need to pay closer attention to how employees expose themselves to online threats by carelessly browsing the web. “I characterize Flash as a low-hanging fruit because it’s become such a popular target for opportunistic attacks,” he said. “Businesses need to be proactive about protecting their employees from this threat. F-Secure’s software is able to detect these exploits, and products like Software Updater ensure Flash and similar applications are promptly patched as soon as new vulnerabilities are discovered.”

Trend Micro Report: After iOS, Google Play also under attack by Hacking Team Spyware

After the recent warning regarding spyware being sold by Italian company Hacking Team which can compromise iOS device, whether jailbroken or not; it was recently found that Google Play also under attack by the same Italian company.
The fake news app was downloaded up to 50 times before it was removed from Google Play on July 7. The “BeNews” app is a backdoor app that uses the name of defunct news site “BeNews” to appear legitimate. Trend Micro found the backdoor’s source code in the leak, including a document that teaches customers how to use it. Based on these, Trend Micro believes that the Hacking Team provided the app to customers to be used as a lure to download RCSAndroid malware on a target’s Android device.
The backdoor, ANDROIDOS_HTBENEWS.A, can affect, but is not limited to, Android versions starting from 2.2 Froyo to 4.4.4 KitKat. Looking into the app’s routines, Trend Micro believes the app can circumvent Google Play restrictions by using dynamic loading technology. Initially, it only asks for three permissions and can be deemed safe by Google’s security standards as there are no exploit codes to be found in the app. However, dynamic loading technology allows the app to download and execute a partial of code from the Internet. It will not load the code while Google is verifying the app but will later push the code once the victim starts using it.
Leaked Code Includes How-To and Google Play Account
Trend Micro also found the source code of the backdoor and its server among the Hacking Team dump. The document labeled “core-android-market-master.zip” includes detailed instructions on how customers can manipulate the backdoor as well as a ready-made Google Play account they can use.

HP and Intel Team to Advance Innovation

At the International Supercomputing Conference, HP today announced a High Performance Computing (HPC) alliance with Intel Corporation created to advance customer innovation and help expand accessibility of HPC to enterprises of all sizes. To increase accessibility of HPC, the companies will launch a new Center of Excellence (CoE), which is designed to bring a community of experts from both companies to support customers in planning, developing, deploying and managing HPC solutions.
The promise of HPC is rapidly expanding beyond governments and academia to enterprises of all sizes that want to accelerate the pace of big data analytics and business insight. In fact, the International Data Corporation forecasts that the base HPC compute server market will reach $15.2 billion in 2019[1], as organizations seek to adopt HPC technologies to run advanced analytics and big data workloads.
There is a perfect storm of market dynamics driving the accelerated demand for HPC across commercial enterprises including:

As a result of the new alliance, HP is offering its HPC Solutions Framework based on HP Apollo servers, which are specialized for HPC and now optimized to support industry-specific software applications from an ecosystem of leading independent software vendors (ISV). These solutions will dramatically simplify the deployment of HPC for customers in industries such as oil and gas, life sciences and financial services. The HP Apollo product line integrates Intel’s technology innovation from its HPC scalable system framework, which helps to extend the resilience, reliability, power efficiency and price/performance of the HP Apollo solutions.
To provide finely tuned and well-balanced systems that focus on unique customer workloads and application performance, the systems will leverage next-generation Intel® Xeon® processors, the Intel® Xeon Phi™ product family, Intel® Omni-Path interconnect technology and the Intel® Enterprise Edition of Lustre*.

HP Expands Center of Excellence for HPC
The HPC CoE is designed to make it easier for customers to use and deploy HPC solutions and enhance their overall experience with a very unique blend of vertical industry skills and ISV partner relationships. It augments the innovative capabilities to deliver a rich customer experience, engineering, code modernization skills and a pool of domain experts to deliver differentiated business outcomes. HP and Intel are enhancing capabilities at the HPC CoE in Grenoble, France, including providing customers with the opportunity to work with ISVs, and HP/Intel engineers to modernize code. The HP/Intel CoE in Grenoble enables customers, developers and ISVs to carry out proof of concept, benchmarks and characterizations to optimize the infrastructure for HPC-related workloads. HP and Intel will also open a new CoE in Houston, Texas to better support the North American market.
The dedicated infrastructure and expertise available at the CoEs, as well as a broad portfolio of services, can be used on-site or accessed remotely.
