Sennheiser looks to set up stores in India
Family-owned German premium audio products maker, Sennheiser, is exploring options to set up company-owned stores in India and also evaluating options for manufacturing and assembling in the country at a later stage, global CEO Andreas Sennheiser said. Talking to ET, Sennheiser said the company will initiate talks with the government to relax the 30% local sourcing norm as the company makes products that involves cutting edge technology.“However, the government should not link direct retail presence with manufacturing or sourcing in India since making such a hard connection may discourage a lot of companies. Instead, the government should evaluate each proposal on a case-to-case basis. For companies who are keen to set up manufacturing, this can be a potent and win win package,” said Sennheiser, who is currently in India as part of his annual visit to the country. The government last week decided to relax local sourcing norms for companies with ‘cutting edge’ technology keen to open own stores in the country for up to eight years. This may pave the way for Apple to set up its own stores in the country as it wants a direct presence. Even Chinese smartphone maker LeEco has applied for relaxation from sourcing clause for its stores..Sennheiser said the company at present has around five company-owned stores globally, but it would want to ramp-up its direct presence in India which is the fastest growing big market globally. The company is growing sales at 30% year-on-year, but declined to share financials. “India is becoming a premium market for consumer audio products and we have the largest share of voice amongst all brands. The pace at which we are growing, India would become amongst the top ten markets for us in next two years,” said Sennheiser. He said its most expensive headphone priced at around 50,000 will be launched in India soon.Sennheiser said the company has been exploring options to manufacture or assemble in India ever since Prime Minister Narendra Modi went to its home town Hannover last year and made a strong pitch for Make in India.

It enables students to raise their hands virtually and answer via personal texts to the teacher, therefore encouraging participation from hesitant students and those with special needs.“Educational environments are more interesting when students get to speak up, share ideas, work together and learn the way they want to learn,” Bert Park, Vice President of Software and Peripherals at Dell, was quoted as saying in the statement.

NVIDIA Tesla P100 Supercharges HPC Applications By More Than 30X
NVIDIA introduced the NVIDIA® Tesla® P100 GPU accelerator for PCIe servers, which delivers massive leaps in performance and value compared with CPU-based systems.Demand for supercomputing cycles is higher than ever. The majority of scientists are unable to secure adequate time on supercomputing systems to conduct their research, based on National Science Foundation data1. In addition, high performance computing (HPC) technologies are increasingly required to power computationally intensive deep learning applications, while researchers are applying AI techniques to drive advances in traditional scientific fields.
The Tesla P100 GPU accelerator for PCIe meets these computational demands through the unmatched performance and efficiency of the NVIDIA Pascal™ GPU architecture. It enables the creation of “super nodes” that provide the throughput of more than 32 commodity CPU-based nodes and deliver up to 70 percent lower capital and operational costs2.“Accelerated computing is the only path forward to keep up with researchers’ insatiable demand for HPC and AI supercomputing,” said Ian Buck, vice president of accelerated computing at NVIDIA. “Deploying CPU-only systems to meet this demand would require large numbers of commodity compute nodes, leading to substantially increased costs without proportional performance gains. Dramatically scaling performance with fewer, more powerful Tesla P100-powered nodes puts more dollars into computing instead of vast infrastructure overhead.”The Tesla P100 for PCIe is available in a standard PCIe form factor and is compatible with today’s GPU-accelerated servers. It is optimized to power the most computationally intensive AI and HPC data center applications. A single Tesla P100-powered server delivers higher performance than 50 CPU-only server nodes when running the AMBER molecular dynamics code3, and is faster than 32 CPU-only nodes when running the VASP material science application4.Later this year, Tesla P100 accelerators for PCIe will power an upgraded version of Europe’s fastest supercomputer, the Piz Daint system at the Swiss National Supercomputing Center in Lugano, Switzerland.“Tesla P100 accelerators deliver new levels of performance and efficiency to address some of the most important computational challenges of our time,” said Thomas Schulthess, professor of computational physics at ETH Zurich and director of the Swiss National SupercThe Tesla P100 for PCIe is the latest addition to the NVIDIA Tesla Accelerated Computing Platform. Key features include:Unmatched application performance for mixed-HPC workloads — Delivering 4.7 teraflops and 9.3 teraflops of double-precision and single-precision peak performance, respectively, a single Pascal-based Tesla P100 node provides the equivalent performance of more than 32 commodity CPU-only servers.CoWoS with HBM2 for unprecedented efficiency — The Tesla P100 unifies processor and data into a single package to deliver unprecedented compute efficiency. An innovative approach to memory design — chip on wafer on substrate (CoWoS) with HBM2 — provides a 3x boost in memory bandwidth performance, or 720GB/sec, compared to the NVIDIA Maxwell™ architecture.Page Migration Engine for simplified parallel programming — Frees developers to focus on tuning for higher performance and less on managing data movement, and allows applications to scale beyond the GPU physical memory size with support for virtual memory paging. Unified memory technology dramatically improves productivity by enabling developers to see a single memory space for the entire node.Unmatched application support — With 410 GPU-accelerated applications, including nine of the top 10 HPC applications, the Tesla platform is the world’s leading HPC computing platform.AvailabilityNVIDIA Tesla P100 GPU accelerator for PCIe-based systems is expected to be available beginning in Q4 2016 from NVIDIA reseller partners and server manufacturers, including Cray, Dell, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, IBM and SGI.Asus A540, R558 Laptops With 15.6-Inch Displays, USB Type-C Ports Launched in India

Fujitsu Launches New Simulator For Visually Creating Product Assembly Configurations
Fujitsu today announced the launch of a new version of its digital production preparation tool, FUJITSU Manufacturing Industry Solution VPS (Virtual Product and Process Simulator), developed by Digital Process Ltd., which supports product assembly process studies with 3D models. The new version, which adds functionality for creating product assembly configurations visually, will commence global availability(1) to the manufacturing industry, starting today. This new version now offers “configuration blocks,” which by displaying component parts as shape images when incorporating product design CAD configurations into VPS assembly configurations, and expressing in a chart the relationships between the units, enables visual editing of assembly sequences. In addition, Fujitsu has strengthened its functionality such that changes in CAD data are immediately reflected in the VPS, with the aim of improving work quality and efficiency. These changes have made it even easier to use 3D data in production preparation tasks, contributing to the shortening of development times and improvements in product quality.
VPS is a software package that covers the entire process of production preparation, using 3D model data of products created in CAD tools for product reviews, process reviews when assembling products, production line layout reviews, and creating documents used in manufacturing, in order to support the smooth start-up of mass production. In order to turn 3D model data created in CAD programs into assembly process information, it is first necessary to change it from a CAD configuration into a configuration that has taken assembly configuration or assembly sequence into account. There has been a demand for a means to greatly reduce the amount of time and man-hours necessary for the editing tasks needed to create this assembly configuration for large numbers of components, as well as to reuse old product configurations. By offering this new VPS version, and strengthening its configuration creation functionality and performance, Fujitsu is supporting greater work efficiency for its manufacturing customers.

Lenovo Bets Big On India To Fix Dropping Smartphone Biz
Lenovo is now betting big on the Indian market to fix the dropping smartphone business. Lenovo, which received about USD one billion in revenue from India last year, is also looking at bringing in more premium devices here, including new Moto Z smartphones that can be customized with ‘mods’.“We will continue to invest in the market and grow our share here, there is a strong long term potential,” PTI report published in Economic Times quoted Lenovo Senior Vice President and Co-President Mobile Business Group (MBG) Aymar de Lencquesaing as saying. He added the potential in the Indian market is huge as 4G networks are being rolled out by telecom operators and there is robust economic growth.“We have a share of about nine per cent and we are focused on growing that. Getting to double digits should not be difficult,” he said.Lenovo reported its first loss in six years, majorly hit by exceptional acquisition and restructuring costs as well as weak sales for its smartphones business. Lenovo booked a net loss of $128 million for the year ended March 31, which compared with a profit of $829 million the previous year and analysts’ expectations for a loss of $123.6 million, according to Thomson Reuters SmartEstimates.Last year, Lenovo’s revenues from India grew about 90 per cent, even as that from China declined 26 per cent. Overall, revenues grew 68 per cent.According to research firm Gartner, smartphone sales are expected to slow down in 2016 globally, rising only seven per cent compared to double digit growth seen in previous years. This is on the back of slower sales growth in mature markets like Europe and Japan. Smartphone sales were flat in China in 2015 and little growth is expected in the next five years. India, on the other hand, remains an opportunity and presents the highest growth potential, Gartner said.Asked about the investment plans, Lencquesaing said the company is studying ramping up the manufacturing capacity in India from the current 6 million units. The enhanced capacity will be for meeting requirements in India and there are no plans to export from here as of now.In August last year, Lenovo had partnered contract manufacturer Flextronics to start making Motorola and Lenovo smartphones in India at the latter’s unit at Sriperumbudur near Chennai.Lenovo is also bullish on the talent pool in India and said it works actively with developers here. It also has a R&D unit in Bengaluru. Lenovo’s MBG sales for the quarter ended March 2016 stood at USD 1.7 billion. It shipped 10.9 million smartphones in the fourth quarter and 66.1 million in the full year. Motorola contributed nearly 5 million units in the quarter to Lenovo’s total, while adding USD 1 billion to MBG revenues.
